Jealousy is an uncomfortable feeling, and has its roots in insecurity. Whether or not there is cause for jealousy, its presence is an expression of the jealous person's own stress and anxiety -- over things that may have nothing at all to do with the relationship! For many people, jealousy has its roots in a fear of abandonment or vulnerability. This is particularly true when there is an imbalance of power -- whether it be economic, social, sexual, emotional -- in a relationship. The person who has less power may use suspicion and jealousy in an unconscious attempt to gain equality.
